Philadelphia Weekly Love

Michael Alan Goldberg led off the Philadelphia Weekly’s top 10 Album’s of 2010 list by naming Born and Thrown on a Hook as his #1 album of year.

PW also recommends you go to our show tomorrow night at John and Peter’s in New Hope.  Since we’re going to be playing all new material tomorrow night some of these words might not ring true, but they are nice words nonetheless:

Drink Up Buttercup are a movie street scene rich in detail and activity, made to seem spontaneously chaotic while meticulously orchestrated. The bright whirling melodies suggest a careening carnival sweeping anyone nearby up in its bustling energy. Like a love child of the Flaming Lips and Sgt. Pepper’s, the Philly quartet’s psychedelica bubbles with playful experimentation, sudden bursts of instrumentation and abundant wonder particularly apparent in the soaring harmonies. Their ragged shambling gait imbues everything with a lively vibrancy as though muttering “light as a feather” might enable them to take off. After all the buzz that greeted this year’s debut LP Born and Thrown On a Hook, I wouldn’t bet against it. -Chris Parker [ link to original article ]

Time Stamp CMJ Show Review

We played a new set with some new songs at CMJ last week.  Here is a really cool song by song rundown of our set by thedenofbushwick.com so you can see what went down if you missed it:

11:24 PM – Bowery Electric

Arrived just in time to say what’s up to my boys in Drink Up Buttercup. Packed house, let’s loose a thundering rhino from Philly in it.

11:45 PM – Drink Up Buttercup

Jim (frontman for DUB) just said they are playing 4 new songs tonight. Now I am really excited. The next evolution of Drink Up Buttercup is something I ponder much. I was hoping they’d treat some new songs for CMJ, and it looks like will be the case. Solid!

Blood is gon’ stain the mattress.

That’s graphic.

11:48 PM – Drink Up Buttercup

New Dub. Holy shit. Wow. Bounce house. Drummer gon’ bruise his leg, that Mike T. And can’t nobody harmonize like this band. I challenge. Beautiful like a breeze.

11:51 PM - DUB

New song into “Young Ladies.” Again, each time I see them, the songs are slightly different, meticulously evolved. Now the cymbals are smashing the docks of my ear canals.

11:55PM – DUB

Into “Gods and Gentlemen.”

What. The first 4 songs have been one continuous track, like the trains from borough to borough.

It’s the anthem for a generation, and they don’t even know it. Top form. It might be the best I’ve ever heard them.

“Even Think”

This song gets me man. Best chorus for miles, I challenge all Chair/Lunch/Dinners, a la Mitch Hedberg.

Singer/keyboardist Farzad Houshiarnejad is playing an electronic loop between songs, in which a voice eerily similar to that of the Speak & Spell is telling us to “buy Drink Up Buttercup merchandise.” On the Stephen Hawking tip.

So much better than actually saying it.

12:03 AM – DUB

New song “Meatman,” bring on the David Lynch soundtrack.

Let’s go clobber some mailboxes down from a speeding bulldozer. This song is tougher than “LA Woman.” Ben Money on bass, walking in.

12:07 AM – DUB

New song. Opening harmony. Damn. Goddamn. They are so good. This is DUB’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Song structures more colorful & surprising than Lego houses.

12:12 AM – DUB

My mind is blown by that last song. Now into “Heavy Hand,” so debaucherous this drink-shattering track. Like, I’ma finish my whiskey and throw the glass against the wall. Then crunch on the chunks when I gallop over in my CHUCKS.

12:17 AM - DUB

“Seasickness Pills.”

12:20 AM – DUB

Farzad & bassist Ben Money stand behind Jim when he goes operatic in “Seasickess Pills.” I guess one’s ears might be at risk, if standing in front of that vibrato-laden howitzer of a howl.

Still gets me every time. It’s as if my entire body had fallen ‘asleep,’ and then when that end part comes, I start to tingle all over, like my collective being as a whole is waking up, changing position, unfreezing.

DUB are legend.

12:37 AM – Bowery Electric Bar

Edison light bulbs are ubiquitous in NYC.  So are unexpected moments, like hearing a song that makes you shake with the chills.

12:40 AM – Bowery Electric Bar

A blind fellow just strolled up to the bar, and is ordering a beer. That’s the third blind person I have seen today, fearlessly navigating the streets of fucking New York City. I can’t even imagine, holy shit right? And to think, all they need is a stick and memory.

Thas’ a tess’.

Neo-psychedelians Drink Up Buttercup play Chameleon

By MICHAEL C. UPTON, Correspondent

After cutting its first full-length album in Philadelphia and building up its fan base with a cross-country tour that included a stop at the high-profile South by Southwest festival, Drink Up Buttercup decided to return home to Doylestown.

The four-member psychedelic rock band bought a house with the intention of turning it into a studio, and immediately committed to a last-minute appearance at a local arts festival. They did not get the homecoming they expected.

“We thought, ‘Let’s do this as kind of our hello,’” frontman Jim Harvey said. “We got kicked off the stage after two songs. It was a little bit too raucous for the merchants in town.”

DUB Recording House + Bucks County Shows

We are saying peace to Philly for a bit and going back to our roots in Bucks County to begin the recording of our next album.  We recently got hooked up with a “sick” pad in Doylestown where we’ll be living and fleshing out ideas for our next record.  To celebrate/totally coincidentally we will be playing two Bucks County shows this weekend.  Saturday we’ll be at Big Heads and Sunday we play for free (at 11 in the morning?  yes, at 11am) in the streets of Doylestown proper.

Our track Sosey and Dosey is going to be on this week’s episode of Weeds.  The episode airs Monday 9/13 on Showtime and you can find any other info you might need to know here: http://www.sho.com/site/weeds/home.do
